Pay and Taxation

Pay

We will make every effort to secure you a top rate of pay.  Depending on your assignment, travel expenses may also be covered.

You will be paid weekly by SWIIS at an agreed hourly rate following the submission of a timesheet. This timesheet must be countersigned by an authorised person from your place of work. The hourly rate agreed between yourself and your recruitment consultant will depend on your experience, qualifications and the nature of the assignment.

You will be paid directly into your bank account which we can help open for you.

Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions

All those in paid employment are taxed under Pay As You Earn (PAYE) scheme meaning that each time you are paid, we will deduct from your earnings an amount for tax. This tax comes in two parts: Income Tax and National Insurance. We are required to make these deductions by UK law, which we pay, on your behalf, to the UK Income Tax authority (Inland Revenue).  Your Income Tax deductions are paid to the Inland Revenue with reference to your National Insurance number.

National Insurance

As a new employee you will be required to apply to your local Department for Work and Pensions(DWP) office for a National Insurance number. Contact details for your local DWP office can be found in the local Yellow Pages telephone directory under JobCentre Plus. Alternatively, visit www.yell.co.uk.

Your National Insurance will be unique to yourself and will easily identify you to the Income Tax & DWP offices.

In applying to your local DWP office, they will require a number of forms of identification. These include:

  • Your passport
  • Your work permit/visa & right to abode (if applicable)
  • Details of your current place of residence
  • Proof of employment (e.g. a payslip)

After the initial application, you will be notified of the procedures, which the DWP will apply in allocating you a National Insurance number.

For further information, visit www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk or www.dwp.gov.uk

As a working overseas national in the UK, you will be eligible to obtain a tax rebate at various stages of your employment. SWIIS will be able to offer advice as to how you can claim your rebate.

Forming a company

It is possible to set yourself up as a limited company and we can provide assistance in this regard. This isn't an arrangement that should be entered lightly and independent advice is recommended.  In accordance with UK regulations, we will deduct at source the appropriate tax and national insurance contributions.
